Caregiver Support - Medication

Maintaining proper nutrition with a healthy, balanced diet is especially important during the weeks after returning from the hospital. Doctors and nutritionists may restrict certain foods, recommend others or simply allow your loved one to eat whatever they want in order to regain strength.
  • Maintain and monitor a list of all foods and/or ingredients that are restricted by doctor's orders.
  • When preparing meals, it may be easier and more convenient to plan ahead for the entire week.
  • Regularly stock the pantry or freezer with easy-to-prepare foods in the event you are unable to make the planned meal.
  • Watch carefully for chewing and swallowing difficulties, and make sure water is readily available.
Use the Meal Plan Chart to keep track of the dos and don'ts of your loved one's diet, as well as favorite foods.

Older adults have unique nutritional needs. Review the Modified Food Pyramid for Older Adults.
